The season of Lent spans 40 weekdays beginning on Ash Wednesday and climaxing during Holy Week with Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), Good Friday, and concluding Saturday before Easter.

Today, Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate Easter. Since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. The number 40 is connected with many biblical events, but especially with the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for His ministry by facing the temptations that could lead him to abandon his mission and calling. Christians today use this period of time for introspection, self- examination, and repentance.

Lent has traditionally been marked by penitential prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Some churches today still observe a rigid schedule of fasting on certain days during Lent, especially the giving up of meat, alcohol, sweets, and other types of food. Other traditions do not place as great an emphasis on fasting, but focus on charitable deeds, especially helping those in physical need with food and clothing, or simply the giving of money to charities. Most Christian churches that observe Lent at all focus on it as a time of prayer, especially penance, repenting for failures and sin as a way to focus on the need for God’s grace. It is really a preparation to celebrate God’s marvelous redemption at Easter, and the resurrected life that we live, and hope for, as Christians.

Lent is a season that reminds us to repent and get our lives centered, our priorities straight, and our hearts clean. This holy season offers us a new chance to say, "yes" to the Lover of our Souls who created us, who made us in his own image. Lent is the time for a restoration project that will reveal the beauty of God’s design for us, showing once again the scale, proportion, and priorities intended by our Maker. Further, Lent is a season of hope and with ashes on our foreheads and hope in our hearts, we go forth to love and serve. For by God’s grace in Christ, we do not have to stay the way we are.

Excerpt from

The Voice

www.crivoice.org

As I Look in the Mirror...Remembering MOMA

The occasion--my sister's 70th birthday. I rebuked the cold of Cottage Grove, Minnesota to spend this special time with my "Sister Dear." How much fun it was to laugh and be silly once again like we did when we were little girls. We even shared her king-size bed for our five days of true sisterhood. As we experienced this special time, I caught glimpses of our mother in my sister--her face, her smile, her gestures, and her wisdom. Oh my, we DO BECOME OUR MOTHERS. I had dread that thought as a young woman, believing I had mastered both my life and my personality. But as the Psalmist shared, "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Hopefully also, with age comes wisdom and I now see the true gift we have inherited from our mother.

The old folk use to think that our loved ones might be seen shortly after their passing--a quick glimpse to reassure our souls that they are always with us. Moma never did appear that way. She did, however, give us glimpse of her in the faces, actions, and wisdom of her children she left behind. I saw her in my sister Jean this weekend and oh yeah, when I look in the mirror, I see her too!

One Mountain Please!

On December 31st, 2011, many people made New Year's resolutions that will guide their personal energies for the next 365 days. One year earlier more than 90 million adults (41%)made similar personal pledges. Goals will be careful crafted by businesses and organizations as they decide where to focus their financial and human resources. All these efforts are designed to produce successful outcomes for the upcoming year. But in evaluation of all the resolutions and goals, I am sure, there are few that request "a mountain."

Caleb displayed extraordinary confidence as he requested "this mountain" for his inheritance. His confidence stemmed not from his physical strength or his capabilities as a mighty warrior. His confidence was based on the promises of God, His faithfulness, and His sustaining grace. Joshua responded to Caleb's request by blessing him--setting him apart for God's enablement so he would be enriched and successful in his task. Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb because he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel. (Prov. 3:5-10) As we prepare our New Year's resolutions, we would be wise to adopt Caleb's wisdom and "look to the hills from which comes our help, our help comes from the LORD who made the heaven and the earth." With Christmas comes the hope of “peace on earth, good will toward men.” We exchange cards that reflect our feelings about this special time of the year. Some send cards that speak of “the love, joy, and peace of Christmas.” Others choose cards that extend “season’s greetings and happy holidays.” With the winding down of the holiday celebration, I’d like to ask this question? After Christmas, when the tree and trimmings come down, when the gift giving ceases, and the caroling ends, what will you do with Christmas?

What happens to the …

· Unmerited forgiveness and grace extended to irritable neighbors and estranged relationships?

· Abundant care and concern seen in special collections, gifts and other acts of human philanthropy?

· Indiscriminate displays of kindness and brotherly love for others?

Many ask the question, “Why can’t we keep the spirit of Christmas throughout the year?”

First, we must examine “what spirit” we are talking about. Sadly, the spirit of Christmas, we experience, is tied to commercialism, materialism, and greed. It is the result of the “lusts of the eyes.” (1 John 2:16) However, we who are “in Christ” have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts. (Gal 5:24) We are Christ’s ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20) extending love and grace throughout the year.

Second, we need to understand the “source” of the spirit of Christmas. For the spirit of Christmas to be lasting, it must be connected to the reason for Christmas—Jesus Christ. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life. (John 3:16) Christ came that our joy might be full. (John 15:11) It is Jesus Christ who is our peace. (Eph. 2:14)

Finally, we need to examine the “true gifts” of Christmas. As a result of Christ’s birth, we have eternal life. Eternal life is not only a “time indication” it defines the “quality of life” for the Christian believer. Eternal life includes His “love”, from which we can never be separated (Rom. 8: 35-39), His unspeakable “joy” (1 Peter 1:8), and His “peace,” that passes all understanding. (Phil 4: 7) And if that isn’t enough, He has given us His presence through the Holy Spirit (John 16:5-15) while He advocates for us before God the Father. (1 John 2:1) The spirit of Christmas is not found in cards, or trees or gifts but in The Gift, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, The Gift that keeps on giving after Christmas—even throughout eternity.

A Balm in Gilead

Jeremiah was called to be the moral voice for a nation that didn’t care about right and wrong. His heart was torn between his love for his nation and his love for God—a love which demanded obedience. This internal conflict is why he is called the “Weeping Prophet.” His weeping, however, was not a sign of personal weakness, but of his great compassion and love for his people.

Christ displayed similar traits of compassion and love as He conducted His earthly ministry. (Luke 1:36-39, KJV) There is much we can learn from Anna as we prepare for Advent.

She was committed to spending time in worship of the Lord. Anna didn't leave the temple but made her "abode with the Lord." There she would be in His presence continually. Access to God was never a problem in that she could go to Him anytime her heart desired. As a prophetess, she could share her understanding of the scriptures with those who came to the temple to honor God with their time and treasures.

She spent her time serving God with fasting and prayer. It has been said that the best way to serve our fellow believers is to pray for them. Anna saw fasting and prayer as her opportunity to serve. Perhaps she offered intercessory prayer for the lost and the disenfranchised. Anna took the time she would normally schedule for eating and redirected her attention to the business at hand--prayer.

Christ instructed His disciples to both "watch and pray" (Mark 13:33) until He returned". Christ will return for His church. His return is imminent. How then are we to wait? I think I'll use Anna as my model. I will worship, serve, and pray as I wait for the "consolation of Israel." (Luke 1:39, NKJV) How will you wait?

Increase Your JOY CAPACITY

Upon return from exile, Nehemiah told the builders of the new wall of Jerusalem that "the joy of the Lord would be their strength." (Nehemiah 8:10) The joy that could only come from eternal God would sustain them through the most dire of circumstances.

The principle of joy in all circumstances still resonates even in the 21st century therefore I am always looking for ways to increase my "joy capacity." A dear friend knew this and recently invited me to join a community of believers to learn about a life model to help individuals live from the heart Jesus gave us--a heart of joy. Every Monday night we meet to learn how to increase our joy capacity. I now share with you a few nuggets from those sessions so you too can increase your JQ--joy quotient.

We increase our joy when we are in relationship. I'm not talking about sexual relationship (although that is important) but I mean when we are in fellowship with others. God said it is not "good for man to be alone." In response, God created woman to be in relationship with Him. (Gen. 2:18) God Himself was in relationship with the first married couple. In relationship, joy comes from knowing that the person you are with is happy to see and be with you. Relationship was key to Christ as we observe His relationship with His disciples and His close circle which included Peter, James, and John.

We increase joy when we are in community. Social restraints and changing technology have made archaic the idea of a physical community. Remember Mrs. Branch who taught the girls how to play the piano? Or Mr. Johnson's "show and tell" sessions about his adventures in the Army. Or Mrs. Motts homemade cider and gingerbread at Halloween. Community offered familiarity, authenticity, and validation. Joy was found in acceptance and genuine interest in the individual. Join a community that can offer these benefits. Remember the television sitcom, "Cheers" . At Cheers "everybody knows your name and their all so glad you came. We want to go where everybody knows your name!"

We increase joy when we reflective on moments of appreciation. Think about a person that you appreciate and a time you felt especially grateful to be with that person. Describe the emotion you felt when you were with them. Describe what your body felt like when that person was present. Doing this exercise regularly will raise your joy level.

I am learning that joy flows from a heart that is authentic and transparent. That joy begins with God, the most important relationship I'm currently in; then follows my biological and spiritual family. Joy emerges when I both give and receive love. How do you increase your joy capacity?

A Closet Full of JOY, Week 2

Monday , October 17th

"The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? With that Scripture in mind and as we approach the tenth anniversary of 9/11, I have three (3) questions for the WordBytes audience.

What has changed about your faith walk since September 11th?

How did experiencing 9/11 affect how you 'number your days'?

Describe your relationship with God since 9/11?

The God Who Keeps

Economic upheaval and social strife at home. Civil wars and natural catastrophes aboard. All these cause us to continually feel anxious, apprehensive, and nervous. The belief that God keeps us gives comfort and assurance at a time when both (comfort and assurance) are greatly needed.

In the Old Testament the most popular use of keep is nastar and shamar. Nastar means to guard, protect, or preserve. We see this in Isaiah 27:3 when God speaks of His protection of Israel, “I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” Shamar is similar in meaning—the sense is one of “watching over someone or something.” It is likened to a hedge strategically placed for protection. In Number 6, the LORD uses shamar in the priestly blessing for the children of Israel.

"The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace."

The New Testament continues this thought of protection and preservation with its Greek meaning of keep—tereo and phulasso. (Matt. 22:37-40) Therein lies the real opportunity for Christians, especially the church, with its spirtual and financial resources, to show our love and compassion in a world that believes only in "me and mine." This is the opportunity for churches to contribute to their communities--communities beyond their three (3) mile radius of ther church.

As a nation, we are facing enormous financial and social challenges. All "indicators of life" are operating at "record" levels---the highest unemployment, the greatest number of homeless and the largest increase in crime (which includes the cost of food and gas), just to name a few. But where is the care and concern for the needy, the weak, and the unprotected. The proverbial "crack" people fall into is already full of the first casualities of our fragmented and fractured society. I'm not surprised by the "society"--it's a fallen, sin-sick place doing what it does best--endulging itself. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHURCH, ITS MINISTRIES AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS? Jesus told the "masses" (similar to today's church congregations of believers, seekers, and 'others')

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. (Matt. 5:13)

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matt. 5:14-16)

So what's the problem with the "salt and the light"? What do you think about the findings in the Barna study? I really want to hear from you "good church folk!"

In His Presence

After experiencing the presence of the Lord, it is hard to return to “business as usual.” As His truth and righteousness burn in our hearts, we leave renewed and ready to follow the path He has designed for our life.

In His presence, Peter, James and John experienced the transfiguration of Christ. (Matt. 17:1-13) They were so astonished with what they saw and heard that they desired to build a tabernacle to glorify the Lord. These disciples came desiring to be part of Jesus’ “in crowd” but left instead as witnesses of the Christ. (Acts 1:8)

In His presence, the Samaritan woman found the chance for a new beginning. (John 4) Often ostracized and demeaned by both men and women, this woman was offered refreshment that satisfied the soul’s true thirst—unconditional love and forgiveness. The woman at the well came desiring physical water but found instead a Savior and everlasting life. (John 4:14)

In His presence, Zacchaeus initially came as a seeker. (Luke 19:2) He hoped to merely catch a glimpse of this great prophet. Imagine Zacchaeus’ (and the hypocritical observers’) surprise with Jesus’ invitation to “abide” at his home. Zacchaeus came to observe from a tree but became the object of Jesus’ attention and the “poster child” for true reconciliation. (Luke 19:9)

We often come into God’s presence unknowingly like the woman at the well. Other times, we are like Zacchaeus, very intentional in our desire to see the glory of the Lord. Regardless of how we come into His presence, it is important that we leave changed for the better and ready to accomplish the purpose He has established for our life.

Are You Playing Hide and Seek with God?

God does not play “hide and seek” with His children. He desires to “be found” by all. If we desire to find God, we need only "search for Him with all our heart." Jeremiah 29:12-13 holds the key.

“Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me and I will hearken unto you.

And you shall seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.”

The first thing God directs us to do is to “call upon the Him.” This required awareness of our personal brokenness and total dependence on Him. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. (2 Chron. 16:9)

Relational. We spend time with God. It is here that we begin to understand His nature—His ways and His works. He is Abba Father, so we approach Him as the

loving nurturer and protector of our soul and life. In prayer we can be “totally transparent” showing Him all our faults and flaws. He knows our heart. (Ps. 103:13-14)

Dynamic. We can come to God in the morning, throughout the day, or at the close of the day. Our prayers should never be “repetitive babblings” but genuine expressions of our needs and concerns. We often do not know how to pray about a particular situation or for a person. We can depend on the Holy Spirit to guide our petitions. (Rom.8:26-27)

Inclusive. We are sensitive to the Holy Spirit as He identifies the needs of those around us. Prayer is not just about us. God will send people through divine appointments who need our prayers. We are to pray for those God “puts on our hearts”—our leaders, our nation, even our enemies. We are to pray for all saints. (Eph. 6:18)

As we pray without ceasing, let us take a KISS approach—Keep It Simple Susan. Let us come to Him with a contrite and humble heart, ready to hear and obey. Never stop praying.

Experiencing the Presence of God

After experiencing the presence of the Lord, it is was hard for the two on the road to Emmaus to return to “business as usual.” (Luke 24:13-32) Christ's words burn in their hearts. They had begun their journey burdened, but ended it with renewed faith--ready to witness for their risen Savior.

Think about the last time you experienced God's presence. When you left Him, were you changed for the better or did you go back to "business as usual ?"

Why Do You Follow Christ?

Why do you follow Christ? Why did you choose HIM for your savior? That was the issue behind Jesus’ statement to the crowds that pursued Him after His miracle of feeding five thousand adults. Jesus had gained a huge following as a result of His miracles, wonders and signs. (John 6:22) After this miracle, they were relentless in their search for His next stop—the next place that they could receive the benefit of His miracles—bread.

Jesus saw their hearts yet He did not admonish or reject them. He saw their real need as an opportunity to redirect their focus from their bellies to their souls. He offered them the true “bread from heaven”—bread that would not perish but had eternal benefit. He offered Himself, the Bread of Life. (John 6:35) They did not understand because their focus was tethered tightly to the immediate needs of this life. Unfortunately, many walked away still hungry—physically AND spiritually. (John 6:66)

When many of us initially came to Christ, we too, followed for bread. Some of us came for provision—blessings, healing, or miracle. Some came for protection—fire insurance to guard against the “fire and brimstone” threatened by well-meaning pastors and teachers. We lacked information about the “pearl of great price.” In 2011, are you still seeking bread—food, clothing, shelter alone while forgetting His true value? If this is your list, I recommend a change in diet—Jesus Christ. He is life. (1 John 5:11-13) He is joy and peace. (Rom. 15:13) That’s why I follow Him. Why do you?

WEIGHT TRAINING 4 CHRISTIANS

This morning I had tea with my girlfriend, Kim. She is my prayer intercessor and sister in Christ. As part of our commitment to the Lord, we have agreed to meet the last Friday of every month for spiritual support and accountability. Today as we talked, she mentioned a phrase that God had dropped in my spirit last week as a potential post to share with you.

Kim proclaimed, "We daughters of Christ are in weight training for the Lord. He is building us up to do kingdom building." This was too much like God to be coincidental. I began to laugh and posed this question to her, "w-e-i-g-h-t or w-a-i-t training?" She responded, "Both!" We both laughed and then began to praise God for His illumination and revelation. This is what He shared with Kim and I.

God is building our upper body so we will be able to "do His will." The "head and heart" is where we are conformed to the image of Christ. Philippians 2:5 admonishes us to "Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus." Christ was loving (when people were unlovable), obedient (when He was tempted to do otherwise) and steadfast (when Satan tried to distracted Him from the cross). He did nothing on His own but only what the Father told Him to do. (John 14:10)

God is building our lower body so we will be able to "do His work." It is time for us to move forward with the individual ministries God has placed in our heart to do. Ephesians 2:10 states, "We are His workmanship created unto good works which He has before ordained that we should walk in." We think ministry work is limited to the pulpit and to the preacher. Wrong! Ministry in Greek means service. (Acts 1:17; Ephesians 4:12) We were not saved to "sit" but to "serve."

God is building our "wait" muscles so that we will be able to "trust and believe." Learning to wait is an area that Kim and I pray for each other (alot). Isaiah 40: 31states: "They that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength." Our ability to trust is based on our confidence in what or who we believe in. Our belief is influenced by what we know. To build strong wait muscles, we must trust and believe in God--His greatness, His goodness and His fidelity.

Well, there you have it--weight/wait training for Christians. What training has God shared with you that may help Kim and I in our faith walk? What tips do you have to help us run this spiritual race?

Where did Zoe and Phos go?

John 1:4 states, "In Him was life and His life was the light of men." Life in Greek is "zoe" and it means "soul and spirit." The soul is where our spiritual DNA resides. For we were made in the image of God. It provides our unique (and sometimes quirky) personality. It consists of our mind, will, and emotions. It is from our zoe that we "live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28) It is here that we do those "good works" for which God has created us. (Ephesians 2:10)

Light in Greek is "phos" and it means "unquenchable" light. To illustrate the power of phos, we need only look to the heavens. The planets, circle the sun, and it is the sun that provides their light or illumination. They have no "light bearing capacity" of their own. They are dependent on the sun for their light. The sun, however, needs no illumination, for it has a "light bearing capacity" of its own, that is unquenchable and cannot be extinguished.

As I reflect on this extraordinary word from God on life and light, I became humbled at the thought that Jesus, the God Man, came to be both "light and life" for us. Now as partakers of His divine nature, we have His power to also be both "light and life" in a very dark world. As I listen to the news and see the condition of our world, I became convicted and asked myself, where has the "light and life" gone? Where are the saints during this time of great darkness?

My prayer for you today comes from Ephesians 1:17-19:

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation of the knowledge of HIm; That the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling and what are the riches of His inheritance in the saints. And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who have believe according the working of His mighty power.

Today make it your purpose to be both zoe and phos in your "universe." .

Comfort Zone

A friend recently sent me the YouTube of Marvin Sapp singing a song entitled "Comfort Zone." Your comfort zone is where your ability or capacity is equal to the circumstance you may be facing. It is a place where we feel secure, safe, and in control. However, when we are asked to do something we feel exceeds our ability, we are said to be "out of our comfort zone."

While our comfort zone is a place of familiarity, it may also be a place where we lack opportunity to grow. It can become a "gilded cage", where we never reach the purpose God has ordained for us. Many times God wants to do a "new thing" in our lives. (Isaiah 43:19) If we are resistant to the change, we miss the blessings He has planned for our lives. The Bible has many examples of men and women who were challenged by God to move out of their comfort zones and into God's purpose. These included Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, Esther, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, just to name a few. Join Marvin and I, as we comes out of our comfort zones. "To go where we've never gone, we must do what we've not done."

God is calling me

(to walk into my destiny)

God is challenging me

(to go where I've not been)

God is proving me

(and for the rest of my life, I'll say yes)

Yes yes yes!

What’s Luck Got to Do with It?

This past weekend my husband and I had dinner with friends we hadn’t seen in a while. We learned that our friend, Sam (name changed to protect the innocent) had experienced a massive heart attack. We listened intently as he and his wife described the event.

“We were so fortunate that the paramedics were close to where we lived. At the hospital (which isn’t the one we normally go to) was one of the few heart specialist in the nation trained to identify Sam’s unique problem. Over the course of two days, they had to revive Sam twenty (20) times. We were so lucky.” Lucky? What exactly is luck?

Wikipedia describes luck or fortuity as good or bad fortune in life caused by accident or chance and attributed by some to reasons of faith or superstition, which happens beyond a person's control.

Merriam-Webster defines luck as a force that brings good fortune or adversity, the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual, or favoring chance.

Throughout the twenty-minute description, luck and fortunate were used repeatedly. As the couple describe this frightening event, my husband and I would interject, “yes, you were really blessed.” However, the couple never acknowledged the role God had played in saving Sam’s life.

Isn’t it funny that when a national disaster or other tragedy occurs, people are quick to blame God? They retort, “Why did God let this happen?” However, when God does something miraculous, people are quick to attribute it to “luck.” When Congresswoman Gabriella Gifford began to respond after her attempted assassination, the attending physician felt compelled to acknowledge, “Sometimes the miraculous is involved in medicine.”

Miraculous is defined as an extraordinary event or miracle manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. The only Person I know who can accomplish “divine intervention” is God. Ask the nobleman whose son was healed by Jesus (John 4:46-50) or the man born blind who was given sight by our Lord (John 9:1-34). Jesus continues to do the miraculous today.

It’s been said that “luck” is “Laboring Under Correct Knowledge.” Know that it is God who sovereignly rules over heaven and earth and controls the events of our life. Next time you ascribe an outcome or event to luck, think again!

An Eye on Eternity

When was the last time you thought about eternity? Better yet, do you even believe in eternity? If you do not believe in "life after death", you may be extremely depressed with the thought of someday leaving behind your prize possessions (your favorite stuff) and relationships (your favorite people). Even for those of us who do believe in eternity, there is a reluctance to place much time or attention on this topic unless we are forced to do so, usually as a result of losing a family member or friend.

Why don’t we talk more about eternity—the place where we will live out the remainder of our existence? I can understand nonbeliever’s aversion to this topic; for them, eternity doesn’t exist. Therefore, there is nothing to look forward to. But for believers there should be more to draw our attention to eternity than helpless resolve or fear. Eternity should be the place we joyfully anticipate.

1) It is a place which Jesus Christ has prepared for us to be together. “I go to prepare a place for you...that where I am, there you may be also.” (John 14:3) We will be in the presence of God, our Creator and Christ, our Savior. In His presence is fullness of joy and peace forevermore. (Ps. 16:11)

2) There will be no sickness and no more tears. (Rev.21:4) With The Fall (Gen. 3) sin was introduced into God’s perfect world. On its heels followed pain, sickness and death. As much as man tries, he can never reverse these affects. But in Christ—in His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead, sin lost its power. Christ replaced it with eternal life which will be fully realized in eternity. (Rom. 5:21)

3) We will have glorified bodies to house our eternal spirit. Ever wonder why you don’t mentally feel your physical age? It’s because our soul doesn’t age. If our bodies didn’t “breakdown” with disease and age, we would keep right on “ticking.” We will have bodies built for eternity. (1 Cor. 15:54)

4) Eternity is where we will receive our reward for service done on earth. While we do not work for our salvation (Eph. 2:8), God has promised to reward us for our contribution to kingdom building and acting as His ambassadors here on earth. (Rev. 11:18; 22:12)

So I ask you again, why don’t we have a loving eye on eternity? Why isn’t there greater excitement at the possibility of life eternal with the Lord? What stands in the way of our desire for eternity?

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I was needing and expecting “breakthrough.”

I decided to seek God’s face (again, I thought) but this time I would show my seriousness by fasting and serious praying. What He revealed to me was that my view from the rope was inaccurate and distorted. What I called “traction” was really the need for “supernatural power” which I didn’t have. (at that time) I was trying to accomplish through my efforts what only God could do—give increase. What was needed instead of “breakthrough” was a restored relationship with the Person Christ gave me to accomplish His ministry—that Person was the Holy Spirit.

What are you in need of? How will you get your breakthrough? Greater effort? Longer hours? Better business contacts? Learn from my view at the end of the rope. Tap into the greatest resource in the universe. Not the “fully actualized” part of your “spiritual" essence but he “supernatural” infilling of the Holy Spirit. He is available to you 7x24, if you are a Christian.

In 2011, I’ve decided to trust in God and be available for the work which the Holy Spirit places in my stewardship. I’ve decided to let go of the rope!

“I make mention of you in my prayers…that you may know…what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according the working of his mighty power.”

Ephesians 1:16-19

Opportunity Does More Than Knock

Yesterday opportunity knocked on my door. I had been looking for someone to help with my website. For literally years I prayed that God would send the support I needed. Help almost came several times, but I was always left to manage "on my own" (or so I thought). Yesterday God presented an opportunity greater than my prayers—not only someone to help with the website but a like-minded, Christian sister who would also introduce me to the world of social media. He gave me MORE than I had expected in the person of my Cuz'n Teri. Yesterday opportunity opened my door. With gratitude and thankfulness, I joyfully invited opportunity in.

Opportunity comes in many ways. Sometimes it comes through people; sometimes it comes through problems. Other times opportunity may surface as you read a book or listen to the latest news broadcast. Allow me to share what I have learned about opportunity.

Opportunity must be recognized. Do you have an unmet need or desire that needs to be fulfilled? Have you been searching for a solution to a problem that stubbornly refuses to go away? Your answer may lie in a fortuitous opportunity. Remember the woman with the issue of blood? (Mark 5:27-28)

Opportunity must be acknowledged. The Pharisees knew that Christ was the Messiah, yet they refused to acknowledge who He was and what He had to offer. Isaiah prophesized that "they would have eyes yet they would not see—they had ears yet they would not hear.” (Isaiah 6:9-10)

Opportunity must be seized. An opportunity not acted on is like seeing money on the floor and refusing to bend down and pick it up. Opportunities don’t last forever—if they did they would be regular events. Opportunities are for right now. That’s what four friends did for their paraplegic associate. They seized the opportunity. (Mark 2:4)

Opportunity, more often than not, will exceed our expectations. The women at the well went for water and returned with salvation. She expected criticism and found instead unspeakable joy and new freedom. (John 4:39)

Each day God presents wonderful opportunities to resolve our challenges. We need only to recognize, acknowledge, and then seize them. And the results will be more than we expected. Stop stepping over your opportunities. Pick them up. Those opportunities are really "blessings" in disguise.

"And the LORD , He is the One who goes before you..." (Deut. 31:8)
